Photographer and Poet Jimmy Tohill
Born in 1959 in Dallas, TX, the same year Alaska became a state, Jimmy Tohill has always connected deeply with nature. His photography journey began at the tender age of 10, capturing images of wildlife and the great outdoors. He then began writing poetry about his passions when he was only 13. Later, he attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO, where he studied natural history, biology, skiing, and mountain climbing.
Jimmy’s passion for photography inspired him to open his first professional studio in Durango in 1981. He captured many images, including white water rafting on the Animas River, ski area shots at the Purgatory Ski Area, weddings, portraits, wildlife, and landscapes.

Journey North to Alaska
In 1987, Jimmy moved to Alaska to work as a river guide and photographer at Denali National Park. He ended up guiding various places around Alaska. In 1994, with his wife Vicki, he purchased land in Healy, just 10 miles north of Denali National Park. They built a beautiful 12” x 16” scribe-fit log home without running water. After six years of hard work, they were finally able to enjoy the comforts of running water in their cozy log cabin in Healy.
Embracing the Alaskan Spirit
Jimmy and Vicki established Old Sourdough Studio in 1998 at the McKinley Chalet Resort in Denali National Park. It is a unique Alaskan photography studio, gallery, and gift shop that showcases local arts and crafts. With a deep passion for Alaska, Jimmy explores the wonders of the great outdoors and shares them with people from around the world through his photography, poems, and love for nature.
Jimmy still enjoys mountain climbing, skiing, walking in the woods, and spending time with family and friends, especially his beloved wife, Vicky.
